Frequently Asked QUESTIONS
-
Book doctoring incorporates all aspects of developmental editing in that we analyse the “big picture” elements of your story (e.g. premise, plot, theme, character) and identify ways to strengthen the manuscript; however, in book doctoring I will prepare written revisions for you that you can choose to use in your final draft.
-
Of course! It’s your book. You can make as many revisions as you wish, and can choose which of my revisions to accept as part of the finished draft. If you want me to go ahead and make all the revisions, I can do that, too!
-
Nope. Ultimately, any changes made are at the writer’s discretion.
-
No! I’ll act as a ghostwriter, which means I will remain invisible. If you’d like to credit me for editing services, that’d be fine and dandy, but you needn’t mention any writing I do.
-
The editorial report will outline my assessment of your manuscript: what works really well, what could stand to be developed, and how you can go about making improvements. It will address all of the “big picture” elements we’ve been talking about: premise, plot, theme, characterisation, etc., and how effectively these elements are working. I’ll provide examples and recommended reading as necessary.
-
Absolutely not. Think of book doctoring as a collaborative process, with me as a support and guide who will fade into the background of your voice and vision for the project. Book doctoring, like developmental editing, can also be a very empowering process for newer writers, building your confidence for future projects. My constant refrain: if you write, you’re a real writer. Repeat this as many times as you need to!
-
Generally, I will ask for half of my fee upfront and half upon completion of the project. However, if you would prefer to adopt a payment plan to spread out the payments, I am more than happy to work something out. Just let me know in your inquiry and I’ll be glad to accommodate you.
-
Your writing can be the most lyrical, gorgeously evocative work going, but if your book lacks a sturdy foundation, all your beautiful art won’t be able to save it. That’s why it’s absolutely worth taking the time to shore up the foundational elements of your book: the overarching premise and themes, the way plot and subplots develop, how the characters are drawn. Get these things right, and the rest, as they say, takes care of itself. (And: you can then spend as long as you like shining up that beautiful prose of yours!)
